Blissberry BB Sunny Day
Blissberry BB Sunny Day aka “Sunny” has been a personal favorite of mine since she came out of the crate. I didn’t pick her as much as she picked me. That being said, we have been good buddies ever since.
Being the oldest daughter of the great SCGH Blissberry Rain or Shine is pretty special. EX93 EEEE, elite milker, best Nubian udder at the 2019 national show. Her dam has accomplished a lot in her career and Sara has told me on many occasions “You got lucky”. And it was purely luck. When I was buying my first group of kids from Blissberry I had picked two doeling reservations and couldn’t decide on the third so I asked Sara what she thought. The logic being that the breeder would know far better than me how to judge her herd. I remember Sara saying something to the effect one of Dan’s favorites being a FF named Rain or Shine. Rain went on to have a single doeling that first year, our Sunny, and then went on to finish as a single kid FF which is a pretty impressive feat. From there she went on to be the doe we all know today. Sunny’s sire is a neat buck named Blissberry Bada Bing Bada Boom. A tall, upstanding buck that exceled in general appearance, dairyness and milk production. I own his littermate sister and we owned another one of his daughters too so we clearly like the buck and what he does.
So now that I have told you about Sunny’s parents and how she came to be in our herd I will share with you my thoughts on this beautiful doe. She is long, tall and has wonderful body capacity. Dairy and growing into a nice wedge shape as she matures. She’s the kind of doe who can easily carry her kids and delivers easy too. As nice as she is in terms of her body, the best feature is definitely her udder. She is a true dairy goat with a beautiful, productive mammary. Really nice height and width in her rear udder attachment, nice extension in the fore udder, good medial ligament and good teat placement too. And best of all, she has wonderful udder texture and tremendous udder capacity. Her udder is soft and pliable and you can pull the skin back even when she has 7.5 lbs of milk in there. Her udder capacity is so strong that she really doesn’t look full with less than a 7 lbs fill and doesn’t get tight even with 7.5+ lbs fill. Sunny milked 12-13 lbs per day well into August in the Texas heat this year showing a tremendous will to milk and earning her milk star on all 3 criteria in her 5th month and narrowly missing the elite milker list while producing in the hot Texas months of June and July.
We showed Sunny sparingly this year and once we learned how to properly condition such a heavy milking doe she did us proud. At the Meridian, MS show this fall, against stiff competition, Sunny won grand champion in one ring (her first milking leg and her second championship leg overall), two reserve grands, 3 best Nubian udder awards and 1 best udder in show. We were so proud of our Sunny and look forward to showing her next year.
Sunny is exactly the type of doe we love and aspire to produce. We retained a daughter in each of her first two freshenings and hope to retain another this year. Her kids are long, tall, dairy goats just like their momma. We will freshen both of her daughters this fall and can’t wait to see the results. This year we are repeating our breeding to Blissberry Oh Yeah as we loved the results from last year’s breeding and would love to get a little sister for Sunflower. If you love long, tall, powerfully built does with beautiful, productive udders then getting a kid out of Sunny would be a wonderful choice.
